GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ(credit hours)
How it works
- 1Each letter grade is worth a set number of points (A = 4.0 down to F = 0.0).
- 2Multiply each course’s points by its credit hours, then add them all up.
- 3Divide by the total number of credit hours — this is why a 4-credit course affects GPA more than a 1-credit course.

Frequently asked questions
On the 4.0 scale, 3.5 or above is generally strong, and 3.7+ is often the threshold for honours distinctions.
